Ely Tesco scheme amongst those cancelled..
There were some stories in the news this week about Tesco closing down some stores, and cancelling some developments that were due to take place.
It seems that the Ely Tesco was one of the casualties of the redevelopment cutbacks, with the proposed new store not now going ahead.

Water Aid

We use a lot of water every day, and hopefully we can raise money to help people have better access to safe drinking water.

Food Thought for the Day
At least one-third, or 1.3 billion tonnes, of food produced each year is lost or wasted – an amount corresponding to over 1.4 billion hectares of cropland. Even a quarter of this lost food could feed all the world’s hungry people.

Food Waste
Love food, hate waste...
Food waste is not just a waste of food, but a waste of resources such as water, energy and time.... not to mention money. There's also something a little obscene about throwing away food that could be eaten when there are problems sourcing food in other parts of the world, and when the use of food banks is on the rise within the UK.
Year 7 have explored this issue in the last couple of lessons.
Some campaign materials are taking shape... which I hope to share in a week or so's time...
These include talking bins, waste-eating dinosaurs and a 'carrot and stick' debating the ways to reduce food waste and packaging waste.

Year 8 Indigenous peoples poster...
Remember that the Antarctic has no indigenous population, but the Arctic has many different groups. They can be seen on a number of maps that we shared in lessons, particularly one from the Discovering the Arctic website.
Here are some of the posters created for particular groups... Nice creative work, with perhaps room for a little more focus on 'geographical' issues affecting them to round them off nicely.

Revision for Year 8 exam
A reminder that revision materials are available on Firefly.
If you're reading this and you're in Year 8, stop reading this and go and do some revision :)
How do you revise ?
It's worth thinking about the strategies that you use now, as assessment is going to form a regular part of your school life.
Think critically about what helps you remember the facts, but also to make sense of the material. One important thing of course, is that you've taken care with your book, and put as much effort as possible into each piece of work so far this year... I have to say that means that there are some of you who may need the additional supporting material.
Remember that the questions are designed to get you writing and thinking, and aren't really about factual recall of numbers and places... Information can be obtained from a range of places, what's important in geography is to be able to take some information and make sense of it, and make some decisions about what it is telling you, and what else you might need to find...
You'll need to know quite a lot about Antarctica and its geography, what makes Polar regions so cold, and the reasons why people go to work there.... These are places that are threatened too... What are those threats and how can they be managed?
Remember to ask if you need any particular support with revision...

Northern Sea Route
We explored the growing use of the Northern Sea Route at the end of the term, using a range of resources. There was an article from 2013 (which we used at the time) describing the route of the Yong Sheng.
A new page has been placed on Firefly to hold the other resources relating to this new route for freight to travel from Chinese factories to the European markets.
Here's a short film on some of the goods that may be heading here via the Northern Sea Route in future years...
We'll also be using some of the materials from an excellent magazine published by Weapons of Reason which I got before the Christmas break, and have managed to read some of in the last few weeks.
