Superpowers - Part 3 - Russia

We are going to move on to explore how Russia has changed as a Superpower.

There are various maps we will use. Some of these are taken from the Atlas, and others from Prisoners of Geography (the younger person's version)



This is a cartogram from Ben Hennig showing where the majority of Russia's population live in the west, in the European area of Russia (west of the Ural Mountains) - it is one of many new cartograms showing the population density for each country.

Worldmapper: help support this essential tool

The new Worldmapper website was launched at the GA Conference following months of investment of their own time and money from Ben Hennig and Tina Gotthardt. It is used in classrooms around the country (and beyond) and would be great to support them at this time. I'm amazed no geospatial company hasn't wanted to be involved in ensuring this remains free for all educators to use forever. The new mapping makes this an even more useful site, but as someone who used to run a website knows (albeit rather less useful), bandwidth and server costs aren't free...
Let's see if as many geography teachers as possible can donate the price of a pint, or a skinny latte (or more) to help payback for all the maps we've used over the years.

6th Form lecture by Ben Hennig

We are very fortunate to have Ben Hennig coming to speak to the 6th form on June 21st. This will be a special occasion as Ben is world renowned for his cartograms which help people see the world differently. He has won numerous awards, and is currently working at the University of Oxford, which is ranked as the number one university geography department in the world.
He has also completed a project with Mr. Parkinson, as he produced the maps for LondonMapper in association with Professor Danny Dorling, and Mr. P wrote the educational materials.
