In Year 8, we were looking today at the collapse of the
Larsen B ice shelf as part of our work on the ice sheets which grow around
Antarctica in the winter months....
The loss of ice from Antarctica (which is warming at a faster rate than many other parts of the world) threatens to affect global sea level, but only when ice is lost off the land...
We explored what the impact would be on some places around the world - there are many more of course than the short list that I gave you.
We also used Google Earth to find Tuvalu and see how low-lying (and remote) it is...
What happened to the
bits that broke off Larsen B ?
Are they still floating around out there 11 years later ?
We could also use the
Floods Firetree website to explore the sea levels further...
In the news this week is the
Pine Island Glacier, which is currently being tracked as it offers a threat to shipping in the area.
There have been some incidents with ships over the years, including the
sinking of a cruise ship in 2007
