what3words - working closer together

Visitors to school may have noticed we have started to use the what3words addressing system to guide visitors and parents to particular parts of the school site for sports fixtures or school events. The website has provided a 3 word address for every 3m square area of the world - 57 trillion in total. On Friday morning, we welcomed Jack Waley-Cohen, one of the co-founders to school. After a fascinating discussion about the company's work, and a chat with the Head of the Junior school, I gave Jack a tour of the site, showing him some of the signs in situ. Jack spoke to some students about what3words and we discussed how he could work with the school as a pioneer to explore how other schools could make use of the technology and the idea. I have had my room 'located' in this way for several years.

Jack also left us some excellent swag which we shall use as prizes for student who engage in some proposed work using what3words.

What3Words are coming to King's Ely after the half term break...

We are going to be signing up the school after half term with new signs.
They have been provided by What 3 Words, who have addressed the whole world into 3 metre squares.
We've had N2 signed up since February.
This is particuarly useful for such things as drones, and the emergency services.

The signs have appeared in school during half term, and will be placed in important locations around the school before being properly unveiled in a few weeks' time.

It's always interesting to check back in and see what additional partners What 3 Words are now working with.
These now include Airbnb, and others. They are being used to identify locations in countries where there may be issues with standard addressing systems, or extreme remote places which are off-grid.
