A lot of shaking going on...

We have a seismometer in school, which is connected to the global seismometer network. It is located in a courtyard in the Senior school near the Physics Department.
In November 2018, there was an earthquake on the Jan Mayen Islands, north of Iceland and the seismometer picked it up very clearly. Magnitude 6.8.

Seismometer

As I've previously blogged, we are very fortunate to have a seismometer on the school site, which is connected to the global network, and is able to record the trace of seismic waves which are coming from major earthquakes on the other side of the world.

Over the last week we have had a number of major earthquakes, including the large one in New Zealand.

King's Ely Seismometer

After a period of testing and calibration, the seismometer which has been installed outside the Physics lab is now part of the British Geological Survey UK Schools and IRIS global seismic networks, and has already picked up the seismic waves from a number of large earthquakes.

New Seismometer

Over in Senior school, we now have our own seismometer operating... It is located outside the Science classroom. Mr. Kittoe has reported on the arrival of the equipment, which automatically sends records to IRIS. Over time, the instrument will become part of the global networks of instruments reporting to IRIS.
