Flatford Mill - 2 - Having a field day.... (preparation)
Mini version of the fieldwork equipment which we will be using was handed out...
Laminated cards with the equipment which was going to be used on the day.
Measuring
Five points along the river's width will be measured, at each of the five field study sites.
Low-lying area means we wouldn't be measuring gradient, but we could do in other situations.
We will also be calculating discharge from other measurements.
We would be using a Hydro-Prop with an impellor for the flow velocity measurement....
Also discussed the various risks, and carried out a risk assessment for the day.

- Depth
- Velocity (float and flow)
- Wetted perimeter
- Bedload size and shape

Flatford Mill - 1 - Arrival
Spending the weekend at Flatford Mill with Year 11 Geographers who are preparing for their Controlled Assessment.
Controlled Assessment title

"To investigate how well the River Brett,
Suffolk matches the Bradshaw Model"
60 marks and 2000 words
Start by underlining the key words
"To investigate how well the River Brett, Suffolk matches the Bradshaw Model"
We then explored some key words
Followed by a look at the wetted perimeter and the channel efficiency shown by hydraulic radius.
How could water enter the river ?
What variables could we measure in the river ?
What might influence the flow of the River Brett ?
Fact file of the River Brett
- Total length: 149km
- Basin size: 170 square kilometres
- Tributary of River Stour
- Land use of the area: irrigation, drinking water, urbanisation (Hadleigh), urbanisation
- Dendritic drainage pattern - tree like pattern
We then explored the format for the Controlled Assessment and thought about some risk assessments...
I've started to put together an ArcGIS Online StoryMap of the area that we are going to be visiting.

Will publish this later today...
About to head for breakfast to fuel up for a day in the field....

Controlled Assessment for Year 11 - Ipswich 1
The OCR B GCSE Geography course has a range of fieldwork titles.
The Geographical Enquiry section (25% of total mark) is entirely made up of a fieldwork investigation of 2000 words, which is a fairly recent change from previous models of assessment.
The one that has been selected for the current Year 11 cohort is:

The one that has been selected for the current Year 11 cohort is:
'What are the consequences of economic change in your chosen study area?'
and the locational context, given our location in Suffolk is:
‘What are the consequences of the dockside redevelopment in Ipswich'
Here are some of the images that I took at the weekend for starters.

Year 11 GCSE Controlled Assessment Fieldtrip
I'm just back from three days at Flatford Mill Field Studies Council centre with the rest of the King's Senior Geography department...
More to come during the week when I get a moment, but for now, here's a view of Flatford taken from up the hill early one morning... made with ToonCam on iPhone...
