Food Security

Featured as part of our Food for Thought unit with Year 7.

The Food Foundation has released a new research report exploring the resilience of the UK to keep providing our ‘five a day’ given the heatwaves we have had this summer - not just in the UK but across Europe - and severe weather in other parts of the world.

The UK's plan seems to be that we just buy food from other countries rather than grow it ourself. Assuming that: a) the price doesn't go up massively and b) they are happy to keep sending us food rather than using it to feed their own populations.

Long term, that doesn't seem like a good idea... and not overly resilient.

Food security is national security.

Five of the UK’s nine most-purchased fruits can be grown domestically – including apples, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and pears – but the UK grows less than 40% of domestic consumption for four of those.

For vegetables, only carrots reach a high level of self-sufficiency (94%), while the UK could grow more of the vegetables most popular with British consumers, including tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers, cucumbers, onions, broccoli and green beans, where only about half are produced domestically.

We currently import 80% of our fruit and 47% of our veg and the worsening climate and nature crisis globally means this reliance on imports poses a growing threat to our food and nutrition security.

King Charles - food is the Big Issue

The latest issue of the Big Issue has King Charles on the cover. It is a picture taken by Rankin.

It marks the launch of the Coronation Food Project which he is behind.

“To mark my 75th birthday in this Coronation year, I could ask for no greater gift than that the Coronation Food Project creates a lasting legacy to help others – and help the planet.

Food need is as real and urgent a problem as food waste – and if a way could be found to bridge the gap between them, then it would address two problems in one.”

The Coronation Food Project aims to support the supply of 200 million meals for those experiencing food insecurity in the UK. Funded by the King Charles Charitable Fund.

You can get a copy for £4 (or more) from your local vendor.

There are three pillars to The Coronation Food Project:
  • Saving more surplus food.
  • Supercharging food distribution networks to ensure surplus produce can reach those who need it most, through the creation of several Coronation Food Hubs.
  • Delivering a flexible funding programme to support the wider sector and a consortium of pioneering food-rescue initiatives.

We will use this as a discussion context...

UK has cheap food ... for how much longer

An interesting BBC News article which comes with a range of  useful statistics and other commentary on some of the reasons why the UK currently enjoys the cheapest food prices in Western Europe: a combination of human and physical geography one could argue..

Food Security

Year 9 will be exploring the theme of Food Security for the next half term. This is a unit based on a chapter written by Mr. Parkinson for the OCR B GCSE textbook that will be used in Year 10 by those of you opting for GCSE Geography courses, and a unit that is hosted on the Geographical Association's website. Here's an EU factsheet. (PDF download)
Food Security is an area of increasing concern, as a number of factors are leading to changes in the amount of food being produced (and wasted)
We'll be working with this definition:

Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and. healthy life”
( World Food Summit, 1996)

Entomophagy...

Could you do it?
Have you eaten insects?

Could this be a solution to our food supply and food security problems?

Should it be on the menu ?

An interesting article from Jay Rayner from the weekend's papers will be hitting Year 7 classrooms next week.
I have a copy of Jay's book on food, and this article is apparently a new chapter... and very much in keeping with the rest of the book.

It describes the background to the launch, by Pizza Hut of a huge pizza which contains ten cheeseburgers in its crust. The pizza contains more calories than the recommended daily intake for an adult, and also large amounts of fat. I would imagine this is not intended to be eaten by one person... though it might be...

We will explore the issues that Jay touches on in the article.
These include Food security, food miles, food waste, the role of supermarkets and the impact of our diets on health and obesity, including the rapid growth of type-2 diabetes cases in China, for example.
Should this Pizza be on the menu ?
You can help decide...
