China's SHEIN village

A cross posting from my GeographyTeacher 2.0 blog which includes details from my teaching.

China has several towns which are famous for the production of particular items, just as cities in the UK used to be connected with particular industries e.g. textiles in Manchester, hats in Luton etc.

SHEIN is one of the most popular websites for buying low cost (and therefore low quality) items.

There is a town in China which dedicates a great deal of manufacturing to producing items for this website.

This is a useful video describing the impact this has:

Thanks to Fiona Sheriff for the lead to this particular video.

High Rise Pigs

This article in a recent Guardian newspaper describes the move towards intensive pig production in China which has resulted in a multi-storey pig farm.

This is partly driven by the huge demand for pork in China, which consumes almost half the world's pork, with a high per capita consuption.

This is just one of many food related stories that we are exploring at the moment.

More to come over the next week or so when I share a few bits I've made.

Public Radio International on the One Child Policy

The China One Child Policy is now 35 years old.
It was introduced to slow the rate of population growth in the country.

There is a brief piece here which is worth listening to in order to get an idea of the impacts of the policy on the population structure, and the wider Chinese economy in the future.

The desolation of SMOG....

A lovely headline on the BBC website for a not-so-lovely situation for many people in cities in China.

The air quality in many Chinese cities is not just bad, it claims thousands of lives a year. For Year 9s designing their sustainable cities, this is one of the key areas to tackle when planning a place that people will want to live in.

Reminds me too of a conversation with 8Gg1 yesterday about Benedict Cumberbatch...
