Istanbul

“If the world was only one country, Istanbul would be its capital!”

Napoleon

Istanbul is a city I've been researching for an EDC city case study for a textbook that is coming out next year.
Istanbul is the largest city in Europe.

The Economist has published a useful resource on the
https://www.economist.com/special-report/2016/02/04/the-lure-of-the-city

This has involved a lot of research and chasing down contacts and other links with the city.
I think, and hope I've done it justice.
I also found some resources developed by a colleague.

This report can be downloaded, and is well worth reading to add particular detail.

ISMEP has produced a useful document too.

I like the final lines of the report.

"It is important to bear in mind that earthquake resistant schools will educate creative and powerful brains. The children who are going to build our future cannot be sacrificed to earthquakes."

The city's Historic Centre has been pedestrianised to help with the flow of tourists.

The MetroBus is a newish addition to the city's landscape: a subsidised transport system, which connects the Asian and European parts of the city.
There are lots of attractions to this service.

More to come in a few month's time.

New blog for OCR 'B' Geography - useful for Year 10s

A new blog written by Mr. Parkinson, to support Year 10s (and 11s at revision time) with GCSE studies.
As you will know, Mr. Parkinson wrote sections of the 2 OCR books for the 9-1 OCR specs, and is going to be teaching Year 10 group OCR 'B' GCSE Geography.
The blog will share the resources that are used to teach OCR Geography from September.

GCSE Revision Support

If King's Ely GCSE students are reading this blog (and if not why not) remember to visit GeographyPods for plenty of support on the OCR 'B' spec exams that you will be sitting shortly.

Matt who creates the site has shared some nice mind maps by a student of his called Joss.
Check them out here.

Geography Pods

Although I won't be teaching much GCSE Geography next year, I aim to help out colleagues as appropriate with teaching, local field visits and fieldtrips further afield, revision sessions etc.

The department that I will be joining teaches the OCR 'B' Specification.

This is quite a good specification, with some useful units and topics to connect with the planned KS3 curriculum and build on it.

Matt Podbury's Geography Pods site also supports teachers who use this specification, and it has a range of excellent resources which will certainly find some use in our department.

One of the things that I'm going to try to do is to get involved in some homework tasks which can be undertaken by students in various new ways.
It'll be an interesting GCSE journey and I'll be blogging some of the activity here....
