Food Security

Featured as part of our Food for Thought unit with Year 7.

The Food Foundation has released a new research report exploring the resilience of the UK to keep providing our ‘five a day’ given the heatwaves we have had this summer - not just in the UK but across Europe - and severe weather in other parts of the world.

The UK's plan seems to be that we just buy food from other countries rather than grow it ourself. Assuming that: a) the price doesn't go up massively and b) they are happy to keep sending us food rather than using it to feed their own populations.

Long term, that doesn't seem like a good idea... and not overly resilient.

Food security is national security.

Five of the UK’s nine most-purchased fruits can be grown domestically – including apples, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and pears – but the UK grows less than 40% of domestic consumption for four of those.

For vegetables, only carrots reach a high level of self-sufficiency (94%), while the UK could grow more of the vegetables most popular with British consumers, including tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers, cucumbers, onions, broccoli and green beans, where only about half are produced domestically.

We currently import 80% of our fruit and 47% of our veg and the worsening climate and nature crisis globally means this reliance on imports poses a growing threat to our food and nutrition security.

Reported in The Guardian.

Fed - Planet Chicken

This podcast is presented by Chris van Tulleken.

It is called 'Planet Chicken', and focusses on the meat we eat the most.... chicken.

Some useful content for our 'Food for Thought' unit in Year 7

"Our food is our history, politics, economics and culture... family, health, happiness - everything we care about depends on food..."

In the series - Radio 4 - he explores the reasons why there are 25 billion chickens alive right now... and we eat 74 billion of them a year. Chickens live only about 35 days if they are broilers...

Warning: a few rude words.

You are what you eat...

We have a copy of Henry Dimbledby's 'Ravenous' in our departmental library. It's an excellent read, and I will be reading it again over the summer to help inform some updates to our 'Food for Thought' topic.

Full English

An interesting Conversation article on the carbon footprint of a full English breakfast.

The article explores how to reduce the impact of this meal, which 80% of British people apparently say they enjoy. I used to enjoy the Little Chef and hotel breakfasts on my road trips around the country in my GA days.

National Food Strategy report

The National Food Strategy report is new out and has been getting a lot of coverage in the media today for its headline recommendations to tax sugar and salt. It explores the impact of our food system on aspects of our daily lives and our health.

The report can be downloaded from here.

There are loads of very nice infographics and images and details, including a separate report on a youth consultation which will all feed into my unit called 'You are what you eat', which I have just finished refreshing ready for the new academic year...

Merry Christmas and thanks for reading...

Taking the traditional Christmas blogging break.

I shall be back early in 2021. This will involve me in developing some remote learning options for a short while at least, because of the requirement to introduce testing into schools - I shall refrain from commenting on that...

Wishing everyone who has read this blog during 2020 a peaceful break, and a slightly improved 2021 over the ups and downs of the one that is ending...

Cheeseburger Infographic

The Royal Canadian Geographical Society has released a new infographic and resource exploring the water footprint of a cheeseburger. It can be downloaded as a PDF.

I will make use of this later in the year I think, and it also would make a good large poster if printed.

Organic vs Intensive

We use this video to consider the differences between organic and intensive farming.

We also let Joe Rolfe tell us how he uses and encourages beneficial insects to protect his carrot crop.

Eating Better Alliance

I was made aware of this group via a newspaper column which said that they had worked out that a breakfast sandwich of sausage, bacon and egg has a carbon footprint equal to driving 12 miles. I can't find that particular statistic personally...

The Eating Better Alliance is a group of organisations that is dedicated to improving the food system, and what people eat.

With all organisations of this kind, I always look first for their publications or reports, and whether there is potential for them to become curriculum materials or enquiry questions.

I loved the graphics in the Sandwiches Unwrapped report, plus the wheel of provenance. The triangular sandwiches for up and down trend arrows was a nice touch. The full report is 10 pages long.
This might be a suitable time to remind you of the resource that I wrote on sandwiches as part of the CILT pack of resources that I created.
This is a focus on Pret A Manger.

There's also a report on attitudes to meat consumption.
