WEEE

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive that makes producers and importers of electronic goods responsible for recycling their products came into full force in the UK on 1 July.


E-waste includes 10 categories of equipment.


Below are the 10 WEEE categories, and some of the products that are included within the groups:

• Large household appliances: fridges, freezers, microwave ovens, washing machines
• Small household appliances: vacuum cleaners, toasters, coffee machines, electric toothbrushes
• IT and telecommunications equipment: PCs, laptops, monitors, keyboards, printers, cordless phones
• Consumer equipment: radios, TVs, DVD players, video recorders etc.
• Lighting equipment: low-energy Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) are classified as WEEE
• Electric tools: all tools such as drills, saws, sewing machines. Only large, stationary industrial tools are exempt
• Toys, sport and leisure equipment: electric trains, game consoles, cycle computers etc.
• Medical devices: implanted or infected products are exempt
• Monitoring and control devices: smoke alarms, thermostats, etc.
• Automated devices: this classification covers all appliances that automatically deliver products, for example, drinks, food, money, etc.

Iceland - art or not ?

We will be visiting Strokkur on the Iceland trip later in the year.
This story made the news locally a few days ago when an artist put pink dye into the geyser at Geysir....

He's been fined 100 000 krone.
I think the Icelandic landscape is already a work of art... what do you think ?

Or does he have a point that the visitors do more damage than a bit of pink food colour?

Last weekend, Miss Kyndt and I were in Manchester at the Geographical Association conference and one of the sessions that I went to was by Hannah Campion, who was sharing her work using the Follow the Things project (you'll have seen our shopping bags around the classroom from time to time)

We're preparing to explore the problem of e-Waste again with Year 8 students, who have been exploring the issues of globalisation, and will now be exploring the consequence of our demands for new products...

Last year, 41.8m tonnes of so-called e-waste – mostly fridges, washing machines and other domestic appliances at the end of their life – was dumped, a UN report said.
That’s the equivalent of 1.15m heavy trucks, forming a line 23,000km (14,300 miles) long

There's also this Al Jazeera report... This waste produces harmful lead and mercury, but also holds tonnes of gold and silver....
China, India, Nigeria and Ghana receive the most e-Waste. EU has banned its shipment...



There has been quite a bit in the news over the last few days about this:

Guardian article on which EU countries create the most waste.

A BBC article suggests that the majority of this waste is microwaves and dishwashers rather than mobile phones and computers as some might imagine

Some ideas for how to cut down on eWaste in this BBC article too - including swapping your own mobile phone for a slice of pizza....

Does the term e-Waste hide the reality of what this is... a pile of toxic chemicals that threatens ecosystems and human health? How can we reduce our own contributions to this problem?

And here's a nice quote from one of the comments on the Guardian article:

We live in a throw-away society the trouble is nobody seems to have worked out what to do with it when it's thrown away.

Ely Folk Festival Competition

One for arty folks at KEJ elsewhere... A week and a bit left to enter the competition to design the new logo for this year's Ely Folk Festival.

Ely Folk Festival, with support from Tindalls Arts & Crafts, is looking for an eye-catching and simple logo design that we can use on tee-shirts, badges, flags and other festival merchandise. We’re looking for a logo that sums up the spirit and fun of the festival which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Details of how to enter the competition along with some Terms and Conditions can be downloaded here. There are 3 age categories for entries: 10 years & under; 11 - 17 years; 18 years & over.
