We are now in revision period with Year 12s as the study leave approaches. We will use this to consider the benefits of particular types of diagram.
You can place an image in the middle and then fill in the boxes around it.

Meet LIAM

LIAM is the robot that Apple has developed to take apart old iPhones so that the components inside them can be recycled - some of them anyway. It's part of Apple's attempts to recycle, which are also going to make them money by reclaiming some valuable components and raw materials too.

Young Geographer of the Year - start thinking about your entries...

We will be entering this competition once again. We have done well in the past, but didn't get any entries placed last year.
This year's focus is on Britain and how it is changing.

700 up...

There have now been 700 posts on this blog since I started it on returning to the classroom nearly 3 years ago. Thanks to anyone who has read this, particularly King's Ely students - remember that this is first and foremost a resource to support your learning... We've also used it to publicise our trip to Iceland, and other events...
I'll be keeping the blog going of course - a long way to reach the 6700+ posts on LivingGeography but we may get there in the end...

Queen's 90th Birthday Celebrations - don't forget

Icons of England

Year 5 and 6 Explorers (in the weekly activities slot) are starting the summer term of exploration with a look at Great Britain (as we run up to the Queen's 90th Birthday). Today, I went through 100 icons of England as voted for in a web poll some time ago (I used it as part of my Pilot GCSE unit on the representation of places). There are also connections to be made with this year's title for the 'Young Geographer of the Year' competition, which looks at changes in Britain (full details should appear in the next week or so)

Students were asked to identify the icons they'd heard of from the list, and those they hadn't. I did a quick whistle-stop tour of all those they hadn't... and they were then asked to identify their chosen Top 10. This is the collation of the whole group's choices.

We will be researching these next week, to produce a visual collage representing Britain, and then focussing on Ely...

Reading for Year 12

This is important reading.

It's the introduction to a forthcoming publication on the ageing of the world's population, and provides a useful narrative on the opportunities and threats posed by this change in the global demographic.

Starting this week…. the Ely Leisure Village

Starting this week, work on the new Ely Leisure village by the A10 on the road out to Little Downham.
This will be a visible example of change on the edge of the city for the next year or so during construction. It's the sort of development which us geographers are interested in for lots of reasons. It will also bring some new companies to the city...

One we'll be returning to...
