Haiti Earthquake

Reminder for Year 9s about the 500 word piece on the Haiti Earthquake, which answers the question: 'Why did so many people die in the Haiti Earthquake of 2010 ?'
This will then contribute to the end of term assessment piece, which will expect you to be able to describe at least three natural hazards and to consider why people continue to live in areas which are risky.

You could usefully explore:
- the South East Asian Tsunami of 2004 or the Japanese Tsunami of 2011 - what were the reasons why so many people died in these events, other than the size of the wave itself ?

On Valentine's Day, also consider this story, from yesterday's BBC news....

- the current flooding in large parts of Somerset and elsewhere - why do people buy houses built near rivers or on floodplains ?
- what benefits does being in an active tectonic zone bring to the residents of Iceland ?
